[2013] Lex (de Kalhex) - Full Cycle

Troszkę minęło od poprzedniego wpisu... Tak jakoś wyszło. Za to będzie mała niespodzianka!

VINYL COVER

Bliżej mu do ścieżki dźwiękowej jakiegoś pięknego filmu!

Track list:
1. Fast Forward
2. Pharaoh's Dance
3. Crosswinds
4. Full Cycle
5. Elevation (Lost Treasure)
6. To The People
7. Circulations
8. Godspeed
9. Time Has No Ending
10. Up In The Soul
11. P.R.I.S.M.
12. Big Scheme

Krótko o tym albumie oraz jego powstawaniu opowie Nam... Sam Lex! <aplause> <battle_cry>
Zapraszam do lektury!

Inter.: Your inspirations in making the "Full Cycle"?

Lex: I started working on "Full Cycle" few month after "Perfect Picture" dropped (early 2011).
By the time I spent few months in Berlin, Germany for my studies. Those months were crazy for my creativity (drawing and music). Being able to spend months doing what I love, helped me to focus on it and push up some limits.

Half of the LP was made during this period. I used to sample some digital files there because
of the lack of gear. By the time I was searching for  those original records to re-sample/ re-do the beats properly. Title came a little from that experience, from that forth and back between Paris and Berlin. From records I found here and there, beats I made and reworked in those 2 places.

I didn't want to do another "classic boom-bap" record, that's why a lot of "Full Cycle" beats are up-tempo. That was also a challenge, searching for new rhythm trying to keep my touch and sensibility. I get inspired by Fat Jon of course but also by artists such as Ras-G or Jneiro Jarel for their ability to innovate and keep it musical.

Inspiration came also from my friend Art Pattern (Mind Conscience Records/ Switzerland).
We use to talk a lot about Art, Music and Life. We put out a 7inch together in 2012, called "Organic Extensions". This release was supposed to announce our solo instrumental LP but also trying to bring something new by using our traditional "beatmaking material" as instruments. This is one of the main point for us, we don't want to "make beats" we're trying to sounds as musicians were playing. We would like our records sound like the records we sample and listen to (Jazz, Fusion, Rock...).

With this LP I also changed my way of producing by listening more the music before sample it.
A lot of people are searching for the perfect 5sec loop and don't even listen the record for what it is. To me it means more respect for the past artists and more spirituality into my own process, learning to be patient.

I finalized "Full Cycle" last year, and I was blessed to get Shing02 (Nujabes, Samurai Champloo/ Japan) of two tracks. Those tracks were recorded in Paris during summer 2012. I met Shingo for the first time in 2010 in Paris but we didn't record anything together until this release. Shingo is incredible. He wrote and recorded those two joints in few hours. I really wanted 1 joint in English and 1 joint in Japanese. I love the fact to listen to a language that I don't understand at all. I also wanted some kind of spoken word tracks, reminisce of Gil-Scott Heron or Rick Holmes. Those 2 beats were made from the same original sample, and both tracks' lyrics speak about cycle, reincarnations, loop,...

CD COVER

Inter.: On the record sleeve, there isn't any information about real instruments... Is whole project produced by sampling methods with basics like keys, etc. Or some sounds are produced with real instruments?

Lex: No, that's the point. Everything is sampled from hi-hat to bassline, but the challenge is to make it sounds like instruments (in terms of arrangements, etc...).

Więc kto nie słyszał jeszcze "Full Cycle"... Ten wie, jakie zaległości ma. Które obowiązkowo nadrobione być muszą!
Album został wydany w 3 wersjach: digital (płatny), CD (Japanese release only - more informations about it on Rockwell site), 2LP oraz 2LP+7".

BEST WISHES TO THE LEX (FROM KALHEX! REMEMBER THAT, KID!)
N' THANKS FOR SPENDING TIME FOR THIS SHORT INTERVIEW. SEE YOU SOON!
